In this series, we dive into the minds of Envana's subject matter experts, profiling the aspects of the industry they're most passionate about. We kick it off with Brian Nelson, Senior Product Manager for Envana Catalyst.
Brian, what do you like most about working at Envana?
We have a fast-paced, solution-oriented culture based on O&G roots. We approach the O&G industry as peers, in stark contrast to a SaaS company coming to help O&G fix ‘their’ problem. Deep knowledge of the industry throughout every team is leveraged daily to build the best solution for our customers.
Where do you think carbon management is going in the next few years?
Our industry has been rapidly evolving in the collective carbon management effort. O&G, especially in North America and Europe, already has more mature GHG reporting practices than many other industries. Now, we are moving from reporting to action; reactive to proactive. The industry is looking for tools that go beyond reporting carbon. We need forward-looking tools that help decarbonize operations.
What aspect of your background gives you an edge in the industry?
My background is a blend of oil and gas experience from both the field and the corporate side. This set the foundation for the technology work I’ve done to enable smarter and more efficient operations. Now, I bring this real-world experience into product management to build software that creates real value.
What are you most proud of and what do you look forward to accomplishing at Envana?
I’m proud of the robust and modular carbon management architecture Envana is building. We easily accommodate a wide range of customer use cases to solve the questions they’re asking today and we’re well-poised to answer the questions of tomorrow.
What do you consider isn’t being talked about enough in the oil and gas GHG space?
In my experience, O&G organizations have a surplus of ideas to reduce emissions. While some initiatives are driven top-down by management like large electrification and pipeline projects, hundreds of creative and impactful ideas come from the field-based personnel. The challenge for companies is to organize and assess these projects, and then incorporate the expected GHG avoidance/reduction into their projected emissions. The company that does this best will have the lowest abatement cost.
